What is 0-20-20 Fertilizer?

0-20-20 fertilizer is a mixture that contains zero nitrogen. The three numbers are called N-P-K numbers and represent nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K).

These are the three fundamental nutrients used by plants, and the rest of the fertilizer blend is made up of filler material.

Each number stands for the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorous, or potassium (actually, it's potash, which contains potassium) within the mix. So a bag of 0-20-20 fertilizer is made up of:

  • 0% Nitrogen
  • 20% Phosphorous
  • 20% Potash
  • 60% Filler

Obviously plants need to derive nitrogen from the soil, so why would we use a zero nitrogen fertilizer at all?

Why Use 0-20-20 Fertilizer?

Almost every other type of fertilizer will contain some percentage of nitrogen (the first number). Even in cases where people are avoiding nitrogen, they'll still opt for something like a 6-24-24 fertilizer to replenish nitrogen some. And that's part of the key to the mystery.

The reason people seek out or mix their own 0-20-20 blend is because they intend to fertilize their gardens or lawns during the late fall. They consider this special recipe to be a winterizing fertilizer.

You'll even find high-phosphorous and high-potassium fertilizers marketed and sold as "winterizers."

There's two reasons for this:

  1. Plants use little to no nitrogen during the winter.
  2. Rain and snow will leach nitrogen away from the soil during this time.

The first reason is easy to understand. Plants consume little to zero nitrogen during these dormant months. Why this happens is a biological subject for another discussion, but it is true.

The second reason has to do with the process of leaching, where water can run through soil (the looser and sandier the soil, the worse it is) and wash away the nitrogen stored there.

This leads us to the obvious conclusion: why waste money and resources adding nitrogen to soil where it won't be used and will be leached away? The answer is we shouldn't. It's a complete waste!

However, stating the conclusion that simply makes it sound like theres not a few more details to consider. There are such things as organic fertilizers that contain slow-release nitrogen.

And when this is done to thicker, more clayish soil, it makes nitrogen available immediately when spring comes and plants start growing their roots and tops again. It may not be much, but it's better than zero.

Or, you can fertilize the soil at the end of the winter season and be in even better shape, which is what I recommend if you have the time to plan for it and execute the plan.

Great conclusion to this series!
Format: Paperback
Margot is sure that long-term relationships just aren't for her. Been there. Blew through the tissue box. Wrote the novel. Done that. All her friends found their life mate, and that makes social gatherings a bit awkward now, but it's fine, really. Even the wedding planning she's invited along to with her friends, that's cool. Well, it was, until Olivia, her long lost childhood friend, happens to be a wedding planner they run into. Margot and Olivia's first relationship didn't go so well, and Olivia has since been married and divorced. Margot thinks Olivia is still as much a beautiful goddess as ever, and opportunity knocks when Olivia is stranded with nowhere to go. Margot is happy to offer up a spare room, but even though she and Olivia are getting along swimmingly, and sparks are flying between them, is Olivia what she really wants? When their first voyage into the unknown was capsized, are they fated to be lost at sea once more, or will the stars guide them to a brighter future than they could ever have hoped for? I've followed the stars all the way to the end of the Written in the Stars trilogy, and what have I found? A trio of excellent stories about love, friendship, hardship, communication, and the self. Margot and Olivia make a fun and interesting second chance pairing, with Margot being the prickly pear, and Olivia being really sweet. Margot is rough around the edges partially because she has a difficult time trusting, which I understand, and that along with other factors compounds into miscommunication along the way. While this story can be read as a standalone, I think that readers who've partaken of the first two entries will have plenty to enjoy, with Brendon, Elle, and other favorites returning for their part in Margot and Olivia's story. Margot and Olivia have the opportunity for a second chance, but giving somebody you used to love a second chance is difficult, no? Margot asks a lot of Olivia, and I understand why, but in the end, love is all about taking that uncertain leap in hopes of landing together on your feet. Their intimate scenes are rather spicy, so don't expect anything closed door about their romance. Count Your Lucky Stars is the story of two girls who fell out of love doing their best to find each other again, and I'm counting my own lucky stars for having the pleasure of enjoying this story and these characters across an entire trilogy. Recommended for readers who believe in second chances, enjoy romance between disparate personalities, enjoy sapphic romance, and fans of this friend group's previous two stories, which I also recommend.

Queer Holiday Romance
Format: Paperback
Thank you, Netgalley and Pengiun Books for an arc of I'll Get Back To You by Becca Grischow. This book is a cozy and heartfelt queer holiday romance that captures the messy beauty of growing up and falling in love. Set around Thanksgiving, the story follows Murphy, a struggling college student, and Ellie, her unexpectedly queer former classmate, as they fake a relationship for a weekend that turns into something more. With authentic characters and a Midwest setting, the novel blends humor, vulnerability, and sapphic charm, making it a refreshing and relatable read for anyone who loves queer stories with emotional depth and seasonal warmth

A FUN BOOK TO READ
Format: Kindle
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was full of fun dialog and jokes. It made me laugh, just rolling with laughter. It was interesting to learn about that area of the country, especially the Cubs aspect. A pleasant surprise was that one of the MCs was a Jew. I liked feeling the connection because there aren't that many in the books I've read. The Thanksgiving dressing made with challah was a nice touch. I tried finding more books by this author but didn't have any success. I wonder if this is her first. I will read more if I find them.
